12 Pound Solid Shot Cannonball ~ Western Theater!
A classic 4.62 inch diameter SOLID IRON cannonball that was a mainstay in the Civil War arsenal of the CS and US artillery. These shells never contained any explosive (powder). Recovered (excavated) years ago in the area of Port Hudson, Louisiana. During the Civil War Port Hudson was one of the most important strategic sites in the Western Theater. For 48 days in 1863 the area was under siege of Union artillery. The Confederates fought desperately to hold the area because if (or when) it fell to Union forces they would establish control over transportation on the Mississippi River. Condition: Battered. As shown. (#p2581)

Artillery Gunner's Gimlet / Priming Wire
An original Civil War artillery implement. This artillery GUNNER'S GIMLET has a threaded end which was intended to be used to remove broken pieces of friction primers from the vent. It could also serve as a priming wire. The PRIMING WIRE was inserted through the vent in order to pierce the cartridge bag seated in the bore of the cannon. This allowed the flame from the primer to reach the propellant charge. Measures about 16 3/8 inches long and is nearly 3/16th's of an inch across. Made of heavy iron stock, this example has an approximately 7/8 inch long slot just above the tapered thread or screw. Though difficult to see in the scans, the slot penetrates a bit more than halfway through the wire. The two scans at left are close-ups of this artifact. The third scan shows two examples, the one offered here is on the right of that scan. From the Don Troiani collection. CONDITION: Excellent. Unmarked. Slight bend at tip. Other very minor signs of age. (#p2770)
