Early VEST with Five Massachusetts Buttons ~ GAR ?

A circa 1870-1880 man’s vest. Originally purchased at an estate sale in Massachusetts, it is a heavily starched off-white cotton dress vest with a heavy front and lightweight back. On the front there are two pockets and a high watch pocket, no lapels. Down the front are five cuff sized (15mm in diameter) Massachusetts military buttons (circa early 1870’s). These front buttons are fastened with brass back rings in a blind pocket and appear to be original to the vest. There is a belt on the back with two bone buttons (one button is not sewn on at present). Perhaps Grand Army of the Repuplic (GAR), or a non-regulation vest that belonged to an officer of the Indian Wars or may have seen use in the Massachusetts State Militia. CONDITION: Wear along the belt and separation inside the front left at the bottom. Other small (inside) separations. Some stains. Expect other normal signs of age. (#p1671)

GAR Member Ribbon ~ Benton, PA 1909

A very nice MEMBER RIBBON issued for the 14th Annual Re-Union of the COLUMBIA COUNTY VETERANS ASSOCIATION.  This ribbon has a great image of a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) membership badge. The event was held September 11, 1909 in Benton, Pennsylvania. Measures about 7 1/4 inches long.  CONDITION: Very good. Some minor spotting. Other minor signs of age. NOTE: Apparant waviness in scans is not present on the ribbon.  (#p2883)

NOTES: The area around Benton, Pennsylvania was the home of the so-called FISHING CREEK CONFEDERACY. During the Civil War Union troops were sent into the area to "root out" individuals who were supposedly disloyal to the North.  A little internet research may yield some interesting results concerning this unique Civil War story!
