The classic THREE VOLUME series by DOUGLAS SOUTHALL FREEMAN. Overall a nice, VERY EARLY BOXED SET set of this excellent work on General Robert E. Lee and the other great personalities of the Army of Northern Virginia. This series is in effect a multiple biography. Bound in the publisher's original black cloth with the front covers and spines stamped in gilt. Individual volumes are dated 1942, 1943 & 1944. Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, NY. CONDITION: All three hardbound volumes are quite good with only modest/normal signs of age. The dust jackets show wear and range from fair (Volume I, which has been taped) to good (Volumes II & III, some smaller edge tears and other minor signs of age). The box shows wear but is solid. Personal Memoirs Of U.S. Grant ~ Two Volumes ~ First Editions

The Personal Memoirs Of U.S. Grant published in New York by Charles L. Webster and Co., 1885 / 1886 in two volumes. These are FIRST EDITIONS in the publisher's deluxe bindings of original morocco leather and cloth, gilt lettered and finely decorated with compartments of the spines separated by raised bands. The covers feature large gilt medallions, and all edges and endpapers are marbled. With the dedication in Vol. I from Grant in facsimile, ("These volumes are dedicated the the American Soldier and Sailor. New York City ~ May 23, 1885"). Contain all forty-nine maps and illustrations, including two steel-engraved frontisportraits and two etched views (with tissue-guards). Also, a facsimile of the terms of Lee's surrender opposite page 496 of Vol. II. Many people mistakenly believe sets of these books were actually inscribed by Grant. However, U.S. Grant died just days after the manuscript was turned over to the publisher, and never lived to see the work in book form, let alone "sign" any copies. Vol. I - 584 pages. Vol. II - 647 pages w/index. CONDITION: Staining and some edgewear to covers. Bindings/hinges are tight w/slight damage at the very bottom of the hinges in Vol. II. The engraving of Gen. Grant in Vol. II has two light waterstains. Other minor signs of age.
