"The flags flutter and snap, the sunlight flashes from the officer's swords, low words of command are heard, and thus in perfect order, this gallant array of gallant men marches straight down into the valley of Death!" Randolph Abbott Shotwell, 8th Virginia Infantry, describing Pickett's Charge.

Maryland Tax Bill ~ SLAVES Shown as Property ~ W/BONUS!

An interesting piece of pre-Civil War slavery related ephemera quite suitable for framing along with the engraving from the BONUS item described below! An original 1858 tax bill (receipt) from Frederick County, Maryland, showing how much tax on "slaves" would have been paid to the collector (the Sheriff of Frederick County). Evidently Mr. James Kerns (?) owned no slaves (as most did not). Filled out in period brown ink. Measures about 1 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches.  AND AS A BONUS! An original, single leaf (page) from the rare AMERICAN ANTI-SLAVERY ALMANAC for 1839.  The engraving at the top of the page illustrates a Minster of the Gospel being arrested for preaching against Slavery. Includes text (continued from a previous page) describing the horrors of slavery and more (continues on the reverse). Measures about 4 x 7 1/2 inches. CONDITION: Both documents are very good with only minor signs of age. (#p2772/3)
