SCARCE! An ORIGINAL 1864 Civil War Soldier's PROXY VOTE DOCUMENT. An Affidavit to Accompany Vote of Soldier who is not Registered. Filled out for Byron L. Tiffany (of the 12th New York Cavalry). His vote was CAST BY HIS PROXY (Jesse Field) in Erie County, New York on November 8, 1864 (as noted on the document). Measures about 3 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches.

CONDITION: Sharper than shown in scans. Horizontal fold line. Two small holes. Small edge nips and tears. Discoloration / tanning. Other normal signs of age. (#p2991)

NOTES: On November 8, 1864 President Abraham Lincoln won re-election to the presidency (over George McClellan) by over 400,000 popular votes and easily secured an electoral majority. Allowed to vote for the first time in history, soldiers in the Union Army gave Lincoln about 78% of their vote and most likely insured his victory. A few states had passed laws allowing their citizens serving as soldiers in the field to cast absentee ballots by proxy.
